(Update 14/04/10) Eastland Group Raceway Engine
Rebuilders Marshall Batteries Sprintcar Invitation Review April
12 2010
New Zealand Sprintcar champion Rodney Wood wrapped the Gisborne
speedway season with a bang on Saturday, blowing his engine on the
final night of racing at Eastland Group Raceway. Prior to his
early departure from the meeting, Wood had been the quickest of
those contesting the Engine Rebuilders Marshall Batteries Sprintcar
Invitation, going close to breaking the long-standing race lap record
on only his first few laps of the big banked track. But it was not
to be for the Tauranga racer, with engine dramas forcing him out
for the night while well in control of the second title heat. Trackmate
Colin Entwistle went on to take the overall win, leading home the
field in the final 12-lap feature.
It was a happier night's racing for the other national title
holder in attendance on Saturday, New Zealand Super Saloon champ
and former local driver Brent Emerson setting a new lap record to
mark his Gisborne homecoming. Emerson also managed to avoid a
spectacular incident in the Saloon feature involving local Ralph
Scott and Chris Cowling, which saw the Tauranga car of Cowling rolling
onto its side while Scott tried to park on top.
Lance Sutherland had his world turned upside down in the night's
opening Stockcar race, Brett Lloyd slamming him into the turn one
concrete and tipping him over. Visiting Hawkes Bay drivers largely
dominated the rest of proceedings by taking out all three races,
with first season driver Jemma Palmer leading home the boys in the
feature.
In other racing, Streetstock wins were shared between 3NZ Travis
Gooch, newly-crowned North Island champ Brenden Gooch, and popular
Hawkes Bay visitor David Hampton. Fraser Wright had a win, a second
and a third in the Production Saloons, with other wins going to
Mike Hall and Alan Will. Solo bike rider Lonnie Larby had a night
to remember, recording a hat-trick of wins. And Deane Miller and
Jason Walters claimed the Cartmell Law Memorial Trophy for Sidecars,
Miller producing another of his trademark overtaking moves in the
final race to cement the result.
As the night's racing drew to an end, many in the large crowd
were counting down to the guaranteed carnage of the Jukes Demolition
Derby, and they didn't go away disappointed.
Almost 40 cars eventually fronted for the event, which featured
lengthy stoppages to clear the race track of mangled wrecks and
even a roll over.
In the end it was the Ford Falcon wagon of Jono Hall that proved
unstoppable on the night, Hall going on to carry the season's final
chequered flag.
With racing now complete, attention now switches to the Gisborne
club’s end-of-season prize giving, to be held at the Cosmopolitan
Club May 22nd.

(update 08/04/10) Eastland Group Raceway has saved
the fastest for last, with Sprintcars set to make a return for the
final meeting of the season this Saturday night. It’s hoped that
close to 10 cars will eventually front for the Engine Rebuilders
Marshall Batteries Sprintcar Invitation. These wide tyred, big winged
monsters are the fastest machines on a speedway track, and will
be led by a driver familiar to many - Baypark 1NZ Rodney Wood. Wood
- after many successful years racing Streetstocks and then Superstocks
- made a switch to Sprintcars about 3 seasons ago, and this year
has been in a class of his own, dominating championships and claiming
the national title.
Elsewhere on the track, there are a number of scores to be settled
and points battles to be decided this Saturday. The Stockcar
field will welcome Gladiators team members back into the fray, while
big numbers are again expected in both the Production Saloons and
Ministocks.
Streetstocks and Saloons have been entertaining all season, while
Sidecars and Solos will also be in action.
The annual M. E. Jukes Demolition Derby will wrap the
meeting, with Neil Gooch defending his title behind the wheel of
a VL Commodore in what will be his 86th Derby event.
The final meeting of the Speedway season at Eastland Group Raceway
will get underway at 6pm.
