Championship season has well-and-truly arrived at Eastland Group Raceway, with two prestigious local titles on the line this Saturday night. Current 2NZ and former National Champion Brent McClymont (Tauranga) will head a quality 20-car field competing for the Pit Stop Saloon Car Champ of Champs. Visitors are expected from across the North Island, including Rotorua racers Tony Heuvel and Murray Guy, Rossco Creswell (Kihikihi), Greg Powell (Huntly), and Hawkes Bays Troy Devery and Steven Martin.
Local hopes will rest with Ralph Scott, Roger Corrin and David Moorcroft, who after battling with each other all season will now get the chance to match themselves against some of the best drivers in the country. Following three championship heats, the field will then return to the track for a one race dash for the Bruce Ellmers Memorial Cup.

Saturday’s championship double header will also see the running of the Ireland Motors Sidecar Champ of Champs. Hawkes Bay and Kihikihi bikes will line-up alongside the locals, who will be as keen as ever to keep the title here in Gisborne. The Deane Miller/Jason Walters and Sefton Truuts/Calvin Fogarty combinations have been the quickest around the banked track of late, but a number of bikes are capable of coming through and claiming the title.

Stockcars, Production Saloons, Ministocks and Solos will also be in action Saturday night, with racing again from 7pm.

- Gisborne will be well represented at the New Zealand Streetstock Championship in Wellington this weekend. Five local drivers have made the trip to the capital, led by current 3NZ Brenden Gooch.
